LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said “every district of UP is now safe, having its own identity”.
Yogi blamed successive non-BJP governments for the state earning “a bad name” in terms of law and order. “Before 2017 (when he became the chief minister), UP was known for riots and crime. Today, all districts in Uttar Pradesh are witnessing growth. Darkness has been eliminated in every way. The government is paving the way for the state’s development through airports, highways, and proper enforcement of law and order,” Yogi said.

Harking back to the state’s allegedly inglorious past, when people would be “scared” of venturing into some districts, the chief minister said his government had restored law and order to the extent that nobody from the mafia would now dare threaten an industrialist even over the phone.
Under BSP’s governance from 2007 to 2012 and SP’s subsequent stint at the helm, the state witnessed 364 and 700 instances of rioting respectively, Yogi said. In contrast, he said, not a single riot had been reported in the state since BJP took over in 2017. “Those who had been creating trouble for Uttar Pradesh earlier are in trouble themselves today.”

The chief minister’s stout defence of the current situation in Uttar Pradesh comes amid attempts by the opposition to corner the BJP government over the lapses that led to Atiq and Ashraf’s killing and the alleged use of extra-judicial methods by police, including encounters such as the one last Thursday in which Atiq’s son Asad and a henchman were killed.
On February 24, Asad allegedly shot dead Umesh Pal, a witness in the 2005 murder of then BSP legislator Raju Pal. Atiq and Ashraf were facing trial in that case. After Umesh’s murder, Yogi had declared in the assembly, “Mafia ko mitti mein mila dunga (Will ground mafia to dust).”
