Speaker’s ruling likely to deny Uddhav group ‘sympathy factor’ | India News

MUMBAI: In an election year, assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar’s decision to not disqualify any of the Sena’s (UBT) 14 MLAs, despite the ruling that Shinde faction was the real Shiv Sena, could help mitigate the ‘sympathy factor’ that Uddhav faction was riding on since the split in Sena in June 2022, the political observers have said.
They added that it will also leave the doors open for remaining (the now not disqualified) Uddhav faction MLAs to jump ship ahead of the LS polls in May or the assembly polls slated for October.Shiv Sena (UBT) has said it will move Supreme Court against Narwekar’s decision. The observers added that the sympathy wave has been diffused a little, even though it may still be there and the option for a further influx of MLAs is also kept open. Had Uddhav MLAs been disqualified, it would have given a new lease of life for the sympathy wave.
“When Shiv Sena split, there was a wave of sympathy for the Thackerays among the public for a long time. Even now, if their MLAs were disqualified, they would have gained sympathy again and this would have hit BJP-Shinde alliance in the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly elections. So the fact that even Uddhav faction MLAs have been spared shows that any chance of the sympathy wave reviving has been mitigated. Had Uddhav faction MLAs been sacked, there would have been a big outrage and a massive revival of the sympathy wave which Uddhav faction may perhaps have hoped for,” a political observer said, adding that even if the SC stays Narwekar’s ruling now, there will be no change in the status quo as far as the government or the two parties are concerned.
Political observers further said with the sympathy wave ebbing, Uddhav faction MLAs could be wooed to Shinde faction which has now been reaffirmed as the real Shiv Sena, both by EC and the Speaker.
“The hatred that Uddhav and Shinde faction MLAs used to have towards each other has reduced and they are said to be in talking terms. Chief minister Eknath Shinde also attended the wedding reception of Sena MLC and opposition leader Ambadas Danve’s son last week. So BJP and Shinde faction can over time draw more MLAs of Uddhav faction. This is only possible because theyhave not been disqualified. This has not just quelled the anger amongst them but also opened doors for them to switch over if they want,” the observer explained.
