Republic Day 2024: 1,132 police personnel awarded gallantry and service medals | India News

NEW DELHI: On the eve of 75th Republic Day, more than 1,000 police personnel have been honored with various gallantry and service medals, as per a government statement released on Thursday. This commendation includes 277 gallantry medals.
Following a recent restructuring of medals, a total of 1,132 individuals from the police, fire service, home guard, civil defense, and correctional service have received gallantry and service medals for the Republic Day 2024, according to the Union home ministry statement.
These medals are now categorized as President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG), Medal for Gallantry (GM), President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), and Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM).
Out of the 277 gallantry awards, 119 have been bestowed upon personnel deployed in Left Wing Extremism-affected areas, and 133 to individuals from the Jammu & Kashmir region, as mentioned in the statement.
Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, Head Constables Sanwala Ram Vishnoi and Shishu Pal Singh, have posthumously received the top category PMG for their “outstanding contribution in the prestigious task of peacekeeping as part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) as members of the 15th Congo Contingent of BSF at the Moroccan Rapid Deployment Battalion (MORRDB) camp at Butembo.” They lost their lives in action in Congo in July 2022.
The PMG and GM medals are awarded based on “rare conspicuous acts of gallantry” and “conspicuous acts of gallantry,” respectively, involving the saving of lives and property, or the prevention of crime and arrest of criminals, with the risk incurred duly considered in relation to the obligations and duties of the respective officer, as per the statement.
The highest number of gallantry medals has been presented to Jammu and Kashmir police personnel with 72, followed by 65 to Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) troops, 18 from Maharashtra, 26 from Chhattisgarh, 23 from Jharkhand, 15 from Odisha, eight from Delhi Police, and 21 from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).
