PUNE: The Chief Of Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj Pande on Friday said no nation can be great without the perseverance, belief, hard work and sacrifice of its youth.
General Pande delivered Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw‘s memorial lecture on ‘Imperatives for future leadership of rising India’ at the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies at the Range Hills in Khadki.
General Pande said that we are a nation of over 800 million youth and each one of them represents an important component of this precious national asset.
“You are the torchbearers of our nation. Our nation today reflects a confident optimism about the future. A large number of opportunities await motivated, bright and self-driven young men and women like you. Therefore, aim big and be ready to seize new opportunities. So, march ahead with confidence to become good citizens, pursue your dream and go on to contribute in your special way, to the aspirations of an emerging India,” he added.
We as a nation, General Pande said, have envisioned and taken up the resolve to emerge as a developed nation when we celebrate our centenary milestone.
“If that is so, then India’s march forward has to be a collective ‘whole of the nation’ effort. It implies that all of us have a key role to play, in our respective fields, which includes the young future corporate leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs sitting in this hall. Each one of you is an important stakeholder in driving India’s growth to new heights,” he said.
He said, visionary and inspiring leadership, is in fact, a sine qua non at this pivotal juncture in India’s trajectory. That brings me to the question where does the nation stand today, in its journey forward?
“Our economic growth is on a firm footing and we are witness to an improved consumer affluence, better standard of living, higher literacy quotient and rising aspirations of our people. These accrue from steps taken in policy reforms, skilling initiatives, infrastructure investment, digital potential, frontline entrepreneurship, our commitment to sustainable development and the promise of being a reliable supply chain stakeholder. Today we stand as the fifth-largest economy in the world, and the fastest-growing major economy,” he added.
The COAS said that India is showing its global importance and power in different sectors.
“We are also witnessing our nation’s growing stature in the international arena. Our lead in championing initiatives for finding solutions to global problems, with endeavours such as the international solar alliance, global biofuel alliance, coalition for disaster resilient Infrastructure and selfless actions like ‘Vaccine Maitri – have brought to the fore, a new perspective of how the world community views India. The successful conduct of the G20 meet has heralded India’s diplomatic strength,” he said.
On Manekshaw’ ‘s leadership, the COAS said, “His uncompromising moral courage, and flamboyant yet carefully thought-out leadership style, endeared him not only to the Indian Army but to the entire nation. The saga of Field Marshal Manekshaw lives on and will continue to inspire future generations.
