The apex court ruled in 2014 that the family of every victim since 1993 must receive Rs 10 lakh as compensation. But as activists have pointed out, one must cross a mountain of bureaucratic hurdles to receive it. The parliamentary panel is right in expressing concern over the delay in payment of sewer and septic tank deaths compensation. Authorities must ensure that once the veracity of a case is established, the procedure to receive compensation is simplified and hastened.

According to data shared with the standing committee on social justice and empowerment, a total of 1,035 workers have died while cleaning the sewer and septic tanks out of which 74 are yet to be paid compensation despite SC judgement of March 2014 which directed that state governments and UTsmust ensure payment of compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of a victim in case of death of a worker.
