LUCKNOW: The Special Task Force (STF) teams chasing jailed gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son Asad and his aide Ghulam Mohammed tried to catch them alive, but had to retaliate when the duo intensified their firing with an intention to kill the cops, says one of the three FIRs lodged in Jhansi about the encounter in which the two fugitives were killed on Thursday.
A senior police officer privy to the operations told TOI that Asad and Ghulam were in possession of at least 40 rounds of ammunition, which said a lot about their intention. The STF team fired nine shots, two of them hit Asad and one hit Ghulam.
Of the three FIRs, the first is about attempt to murder and the remaining two about Arms Act violations. All the three FIRs were lodged in Badagaon police station of Jhansi district at 11.30 pm on Thursday by STF DSP Navendu Kumar, who led the teams that executed the encounter along with another DSP, Vimal Kumar Singh.

According to the first FIR, both the fugitives were alive after the operation ended. “We rushed them to the medical college in two ambulances and kept the spot protected till the arrival of senior officials and the forensic team. When we reached the medical college, we were told that both of them had died,” the FIR said. “We followed all orders and directives of the Supreme Court and National Human Rights Commission (NHRC),” Navendu said in the FIR.
Giving details of the operation, the FIR said: “The Prayagraj unit of STF had got intelligence input that Guddu Muslim, who was seen hurling bombs in the CCTV footage (of February 24) that went viral after the Umesh Pal murder case, had stayed at the house of one Satish Pandey on the Parichha Plant campus near Jhansi.”
Recently, the STF received a tip-off that both Asad and Ghulam had been hiding on the outskirts of Jhansi. According to the specific input, both were spotted in Chirgaon, 30 km northwest of Jhansi, on Wednesday night. The two teams of Prayagraj STF camping in Jhansi for the last few days swung into action and activated their intelligence channels in Chirgaon, adjoining Parichha and Baragaon. An informer revealed that two persons resembling Asad and Ghulam were moving from Chirgaon to Parichha on a red-black Discover motorcycle. While one of them was wearing a pathan suit and a black cap, the other was in a dark green lower and a T-shirt, with a handkerchief tied on his head.
“The source insisted that the two could be caught between Chirgaon and Parichha if the STF teams moved swiftly,” the FIR said.
Both the teams rushed to Parichha – Navendu’s team from the Chirgaon side and Vimal’s from the Jhansi side. “Just 100 metres before the Parichha bund, we saw two people on a motorcycle matching the description given by our source,” Navendu said. “They were moving towards Parichha. I asked my driver to overtake them and shouted, asking them to stop,” he added.
But the two didn’t stop and turned their motorcycle on an unmetalled road. However, Vimal’s team coming from the other side confronted them. Ghulam, who was riding the mobike, accelerated further with both the STF teams chasing them. The motorcycle skidded after a few meters and the duo fell on the ground. “The two quickly took shelter behind trees and started firing at us with an intention to kill. We immediately stopped our vehicles and without fearing for our lives tried to catch them. However, they intensified their firing,” the FIR said.
“Seeing their indiscriminate firing, we had to retaliate in defence. I fired two shots and DSP Vimal Singh fired one. Inspectors Anil Singh and Gyanendra Rai, head constables Pankaj Tiwari, Sushil Kumar, Sunil Kumar and Bhupendra Singh fired one shot each,” wrote Navendu in the FIR.
The STF teams went closer after the two were badly injured in the firing. “We tallied their appearances with the photographs circulated in media and established their identity as Asad, son of Atiq Ahmed, and Ghulam Mohammed,” the FIR said.
