NEW DELHI: Government on Thursday declared a half-day holiday in all its offices, institutions and establishments, including banks, across the country on January 22 to mark the consecration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, marking a significant shrinking of its distance from the escalating fervour over the shrine’s inauguration.
A communication from the department of personnel and training (DoPT) said the half-day holiday was meant “to enable employees to participate in the celebrations” to mark the consecration ceremony.Junior personnel minister Jitendra Singh told TOI, “The decision regarding the half-day closure was taken to honour the overwhelming public sentiment.”
Later, the finance ministry said DoPT’s directive will also apply to all banks, regional rural banks, insurance companies and financial institutions which belong to the Centre.
TOI has learnt that there were appeals to the government from various quarters — communicated verbally, in writing and through social media — to allow government employees to take part in celebrations and festivities on January 22 by keeping offices shut for the duration of the ‘pran pratishtha’ event.
The ‘pran pratishtha’ ceremony of the new idol of Ram Lalla at the sanctum sanctorum of Ram temple is to be performed by PM Narendra Modi and will be livestreamed between 11am and 1pm on Monday.
