MUMBAI: As the Model code of conduct for general elections has kicked-in, railways have removed prime minister Selfie booths, covered images of Narendra Modi displayed on stalls and stopped broadcast of ‘Vikshit Bharat” messages at stations and trains.
The MCC, a stringent set of guidelines, mandates how political entities and candidates must conduct themselves during electoral campaigns and polling processes.
A few months ago, the railways had installed temporary selfie booths featuring life-sized cutouts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on development-related themes. These booths, strategically placed across various divisions, aimed to highlight the achievements of central government schemes such as Skill India, Ujwala Yojana, and the Chandrayan mission.
A senior railway official said that it is mandatory to comply with the MCC, leading to the removal of any material associated with election campaigns from stations. Approximately 50 such selfie points existed across Central Railway, including 10 within the Mumbai Division. On Western Railway, similar installations were present at key stations like Churchgate, Mumbai Central, and Bandra Terminus.
Each selfie point or photo booth comprised meticulously crafted 3D sculptures made from materials like fiber, clay, or plaster of Paris (PoP), with an average expenditure of Rs 6 lakh per installation.
In addition to the selfie booths, Indian Railways had launched the ‘One Station One Product’ (OSOP) scheme to promote local products and uplift marginalized communities by providing income opportunities. These stalls, aimed at supporting the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, featured images of the Prime Minister on display boards. However, to comply with the MCC, these images have been covered.
Moreover , audio and video messages featuring the Prime Minister’s speeches on ‘Vikshit Bharat’ have been suspended to ensure strict adherence to the MCC guidelines.”
