PATNA: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said the date for the proposed meeting of opposition leaders would be finalized after the Congress completes the ongoing process of government formation in Karnataka.
“We have completed our talks with many parties. They (Congress) had elections in Karnataka. Once they complete the process of government formation, we will decide the date for the meeting,” Nitish replied, when asked whether he would tour southern states to hold talks with political parties for opposition unity.
The Bihar CM was responding to media queries soon after inaugurating a Rs 164-crore transport campus in Phulwari Sharif area of the state capital here. Deputy CM and RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav was by his side when Nitish was talking to media persons.
Nitish also said he has already met all those leaders to whom he had to meet. “You all know what the response of the leaders of different political parties was, to whom we visited. What the leaders spoke about the opposition unity, you all knew. So, once the Congress completes the Government formation (in Karnataka), we will discuss and finalise the date of the meeting.”
Asked how he perceived the poll results in Karnataka, Nitish said, “The day the results of Karnataka election came out, we all (the Grand Alliance leaders in Bihar) extended our congratulations to the Congress. … There was a strong possibility before the date of voting that the Congress would gain an absolute majority. The Congress has now achieved an impressive majority. We wish they (Congress leaders) form the government at the earliest. Now they are busy selecting their chief minister.”
Asked about Dhirendra Shashtri’s controversial comment to convert India into a “Hindu Rashtra”, Nitish said such remarks had no value as they were being made by those who had no knowledge of the country’s freedom movement and the Constitution.
“Those who are talking about such things (Hindu rashtra) were not born when the country became independent and the Constitution was adopted by the people of this country. Would they change the name of this country? We have seven major religions in the country and every person has an equal right to believe in their respective religions. We never created any kind of obstruction to people of any religion. We respect every religion and all citizens are free to worship their respective deities,” the CM said.
