NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressed the NDA alliance leaders as “valued partners” on Tuesday, asserted that the ruling bloc is a “time-tested alliance” that seeks to further national progress and fulfil regional aspirations, while addressing the first meeting of the allies in his second tenure as PM.
Modi began his address by invoking the names of his predecessors, recalling the legacy of former (late) Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, BJP patriarch L K Advani, who created the NDA, 25 years ago with the efforts of late leaders like Parkash Singh (SAD), Balasaheb Thackeray (Shiv Sena) George Fernandes (JD-U), Ajit Singh (RLD) and Sharad Yadav, in shaping the coalition. “Advani ji who played a key role in shaping NDA, continues to guide us,” Modi said, while pointing out that “India has long tradition of coalitions, but those formed with negativity have never succeeded,” while taking a dig at the rival Congress led coalitions.
“Congress used coalitions in 1990s to destablise the country, it formed governments and pulled them down… Pre-2014 coalition governments somehow survived but the country got policy paralysis and a high command above Prime Minister,” Modi said targeting the previous UPA regimes where Congress president Sonia Gandhi was the UPA chairperson.
In NDA, ‘N’ means New India, ‘D’ means Developed Nation, ‘A’ means Aspirations of people and regions,” Modi said, while asserting that “NDA is not a coalition of compulsion, it symbolises contribution; everyone here gets credit and everyone contributes.”
NDA always pursued positive politics even when in opposition, we never took help of foreign powers, Modi said, taking a dig at the recent occasions when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the Modi regime, while visiting abroad.
Calling it a “beautiful rainbow of regional aspirations” the PM said, NDA is walking path of social justice shown by Mahatma Gandhi, Babasaheb Ambedkar, Ram Manohar Lohia.” In past nine years, NDA has worked for betterment of lives of poor and deprived, he reminded the gathered alliance leaders.
As he apologised for “all the issues he could not address from the allies and also if they may had got left out from an important invitation in the last nine years, while mentioning that there was not a single occasion when any of the allies had complained on these counts. He assured that it is this trust in each other and his great trust in the people of the country that ensures a victory for the NDA in future (read 2024).
Modi spoke at the end of the four-hour meeting, after hearing out all the other leaders who were present.
Leaders of the ruling NDA constituents were welcomed at the Ashoka Hotel venue for the first meeting of BJP’s alliance partners during the second term of the Narendra Modi government, here on Tuesday, by Union minister Pralhad Joshi, BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde and others, flower bouquets and stoles.
Thirty-eight parties are part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and as their leaders reached the venue, they were welcomed with flower bouquets and stoles amid dhol beats.
