The judge justified the jail term, emphasizing the need to deter such actions for the benefit of genuine patients.
Impersonation Scheme Unraveled
Logeswaran Mohandas, a 42-year-old Indian-origin Singaporean, executed an elaborate scheme involving impersonation to secure medical treatment for his back pain. The motivation behind his actions traced back to a 2015 request for his acquaintance’s identity card and name card, under the false pretense of securing a job opportunity. This led to a series of fraudulent consultations at hospitals and clinics, resulting in bills totaling SGD 421.74 and SGD 945.35. The acquaintance and Logeswaran’s brother eventually reported the incidents to the police, leading to his arrest.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Logeswaran Mohandas faced legal consequences for his deceptive actions as he pleaded guilty to multiple charges. Deputy Public Prosecutor Chan Yi Cheng revealed that Logeswaran settled the bills and repaid his brother, but the acquaintance opted against restitution. District Judge Lim Tse Haw justified the six-week jail term, emphasizing that while the individual charges were small, the overall pattern of Logeswaran’s conduct warranted a stricter penalty. The judge highlighted the need to discourage such activities to avoid inconvenience for genuine patients and maintain trust in healthcare institutions.
