Long recognised Arunachal as integral part of India: US | India News

NEW DELHI: The US reacted to China’s renaming of places in Arunachal Pradesh with the White House saying that it has for long recognised the state as an integral part of India.
India had earlier rejected what was the third such renaming exercise by Beijing to validate its claim over the state, saying assigning invented names will not change the reality that Arunachal has been and will always be an integral part of India.
“The US has recognised that territory (Arunachal Pradesh) for a long time as an integral part of India. And we strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by renaming localities,” said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre at a media briefing.
After India’s outright rejection of the Chinese names for 11 places in the state, China had again on Tuesday claimed sovereignty over Arunachal.
“Zangnan (Arunachal Pradesh) is part of China’s territory. In accordance with the relevant stipulations of the administration of geographical names of the state council, competent authorities of the Chinese government have standardised the names of some parts of Zangnan. This is within China’s sovereign rights,” said a Chinese spokesperson on Tuesday after India’s response that Arunachal is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India.
New US envoy to enhance ties
According to the White House, US ambassador to India Eric Garcetti will be leading an ambitious effort to deepen America’s cooperation with India, including in defence and economic sectors.
Garcetti, the former Los Angeles mayor, was officially sworn in as the US ambassador to India on March 24.
“The president has said, when we look at the relationship with India, it’s one of the most consequential relationships the US has in the world. That still stands,” Karine Jean-Pierre said at her daily news conference on Tuesday.
“Ambassador Garcetti will be leading an ambitious effort to deepen our cooperation with India in critical and emerging technologies, expand our defence cooperation, and strengthen our economic and people-to-people ties,” Jean-Pierre said. This is one of the most consequential relationships that the US has in the world, she said.
