SRINAGAR: A Srinagar court has ordered police to conduct a preliminary enquiry (PE) into a city resident’s complaint alleging that he was cheated of Rs 18 lakh by three persons, including Gujarat conman Kiran Patel, who was arrested last month for duping top officials in Jammu and Kashmir by posing as a senior PMO official and enjoying VIP protocol and Z-plus security.
The court on Monday said the contents of the application filed by the resident of Rambagh area, as well as the material placed on record, made it appear that the complainant had been conned into paying the money in two instalments.
The court directed the SHO of Kothibagh police station to conduct the PE to verify the allegations, and submit a report before it by April 15.
The two other persons named in the complaint are Shailesh Jain and Piyush Jain, both residents of Kolkata.
According to the complaint, Patel identified himself as Chetan Prakash, a resident of Begumpur in northwest Delhi, and claimed to be a managing partner at a company dealing in areca nuts.
The complainant alleged that he paid the amount as part of a business deal following his interactions with Patel at Pratap Park and Chai Jai restaurant in the city last year.
Patel, who was arrested on March 2 from a five-star hotel, had used forged documents claiming himself to be an additional secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office. He managed to fool top officials into providing him with Z-category security and visited tourist resorts as well as sensitive areas during several trips to Kashmir, and even attended official meetings.
