SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir administration has allotted land to 2,711 landless families in the Union Territory and will provide shelters for nearly 2 lakh homeless families under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, J&K lieutenant governor (LG) Manoj Sinha said at a press conference on Monday. The benefits will be given irrespective of caste, creed, and religion, he added.
“After discussing the issue at the administrative council with the revenue and rural development department, it was decided that five marlas (approx. 1361.5sqft) of land will be given to the landless families of J&K. So far, 2,711 families have been given land and more will be covered soon,” the LG said. “As far as the homeless are concerned, a total of 1,99,550 families have been identified for the benefit and till June 21, as many as 1,44,000 have been sanctioned while the remaining will be covered as well,” he added.
“Providing land to those landless and homes to the homeless is a revolutionary step. Once a poor person gets a home, he will think of earning a living and sending his children to school,” the LG said, adding that proper eligibility criteria were being followed for the allotment.
About the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, LG Sinha said that the pilgrimage was going on smoothly on both tracks amid proper security arrangements, even as traffic management was an area of concern, which would be streamlined in the next few days. “A pilgrim coming to Kashmir for the first time is unaware of timing, etc., and gets stuck in traffic and is stopped by security forces on the ground. So, a traffic regulation plan is being worked on that will be implemented in the next two days,” he said, adding: “It is being ensured that locals face the least inconvenience.”
Speaking about the successful G-20 meet in Srinagar — held from May 22-25 — the LG said the meet has proven to be a game changer for J&K’s tourism sector. “The participants of the G-20 meet have returned to their respective countries with a good message. After the meet, we have seen a significant increase in foreign tourist arrivals in J&K. The number is set to rise further in the coming months.” As per official records, in the first six months of 2023, as many as 15,000 foreign tourists — a majority of whom were from Southeast Asian countries — visited the UT after a long gap.
Srinagar was fast emerging as the hub of international activities, the LG said, adding: “For the first time, the Indian System of Medicines, Engineers’ Association, Chartered Accountant Association and 18 Supreme Court judges participated in different meetings in Srinagar recently.”
