VC sticks to land-grab charge day after Didi stands by Amartya | India News

SANTINIKETAN: Visva-Bharati stuck to its allegation of “unauthorised possession” against Amartya Sen a day after Mamata Banerjee handed over land documents to the Nobel laureate at his Pratichi home here even as the Bengal chief minister on Tuesday met a cross-section of students and teachers of Visva-Bharati and vowed to fight against efforts to ‘trample’ over their rights and attempts to ‘saffronise’ education at Tagore’s university. Among those whom Banerjee met was a professor whose tenure was terminated by vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty.
Claiming that the land documents handed over to Sen on Monday were inappropriate, the vice-chancellor termed the Nobel laureate an “illegal encroacher” and reiterated that he should return 13 decimals of land. “The document provided by the CM is irrelevant. It is a leasehold land awarded to the lessee and cannot be transferred to his family members as it is. The land was leased to Amartya Sen’s father Asutosh Sen, who is dead. Sen had mutated the property in 2006 for which he paid Rs 5,000 per bigha for 1.25 acres and had paid Rs 18,940. He didn’t pay for 1.38 acres. So how can he claim it?” Chakraborty said.
Banerjee alleged that “several types of irregularities” were taking place at Visva-Bharati. “I don’t want to interfere in the university’s daily affairs but if someone thinks they can bulldoze students, professors and employees of the university for saffronisation by force, remember, I will stand beside them even if there is no one else,” she told the 13-member delegation, which included sacked economics professor Sudipta Bhattacharya.
“But after hearing about the kind of treatment meted out to students and teachers, I feel disheartened. It is the duty of all students, teachers and everyone associated with the university to save the university. It is our duty to make sure this university excels and lives up to the ideals that Rabindranath Tagore had envisioned.”
