BENGALURU: The JD(S) on Saturday expelled its suspended Karnataka unit president CM Ibrahim and national vice-president CK Nanu from the party on charges of anti-party activities.
The JD(S) national executive committee which met in Bengaluru unanimously decided to expel Ibrahim and Nanu. Both had openly criticised party supremo and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda’s decision to fight the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in alliance with BJP.
“Though the decision was taken in their presence and in the interest of the party, Ibrahim and Nanu have been criticising it publicly. This has caused damage to the party image and the leadership. Both of them have been removed from the party,” Gowda told reporters after the meeting.
Ibrahim was made the president of the state unit immediately after he joined the party after deserting Congress last year. But the party’s changed stance towards Muslims, triggered by the assumption that the community did not support it in the 2023 assembly elections, put Ibrahim in an uncomfortable position. After the party decided to join hands with BJP, Ibrahim openly expressed his displeasure over the development and accused Gowda and his son and former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy of keeping him in the dark.
He had even staked right over the party, claiming his was the real JD(S), forcing Gowda to suspend him from the party and install Kumaraswamy as the interim president of the state unit.
