NEW DELHI: Putting to rest speculation that the Indian Premier League (IPL) could be shifted out of India because of the upcoming general elections, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has clarified that there will be no last-minute change of venue outside the country. “No, it won’t be moved overseas,” Shah was quoted by Cricbuzz as saying.
Shah’s clarification puts to rest any doubts among franchises over the tournament’s relocation. There have been reports that certain IPL teams had requested a relocation of matches due to the upcoming lok sabha elections.
Some BCCI members were also reported to be open to possibility of staging the second half of the IPL in the UAE.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal too said that there had been no talk of shifting the tournament to the UAE. “The IPL is not being shifted anywhere. We will soon announce the remaining fixture,” Dhumal told PTI.
However, the league was moved out of the country during the general elections in 2014 when the UPA government was in power.
Then the first phase was held in the UAE before returning to India for the second phase.
