G20 summit: Why German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is wearing an eye patch

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended a warm welcome to G20 leaders and delegates upon their arrival at Bharat Mandapam in Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, for the G20 Summit.
As each leader arrived, PM Modi personally greeted them against the backdrop of the iconic Konark Wheel from Odisha.
The Konark Wheel, dating back to the 13th century during the reign of King Narasimhadeva-I, features 24 spokes and has been incorporated into India’s national flag, symbolizing India’s rich ancient heritage, advanced civilization, and architectural prowess.
Among the world leaders arriving at the venue, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was seen wearing an eye patch.
The “pirate-style look” of the German Chancellor is due to a fall which he suffered while jogging on Saturday near his home in Potsdam, near Berlin.
Taking to social media site X on Monday, Chancellor Scholz shared a light-hearted photo of himself wearing an eye patch.
In his tweet, the chancellor wrote, “Am excited to see the memes,” playfully acknowledging the potential for humorous responses. To allay concerns about his health, Scholz wore a slight smile in the photo, which appeared to have been taken at the chancellery, and added, “Thanks for the well wishes, it looks worse than it is!”
On Sunday, the 65-year-old German leader canceled scheduled appointments in the central Hesse region, which is holding a state election on Oct. 8.
According to local reports, Scholz had his accident while running in his hometown of Potsdam, situated 28 kilometers (17 miles) southwest of Berlin.
Scholz has been at the helm of Germany since December 2021, previously serving as the country’s finance and labor minister, as well as the mayor of Hamburg.
In a profile on his party’s website, Scholz mentioned that he disliked sports during his school days but developed an affinity for physical activity through his wife, Britta Ernst. He stated, “Today I jog as often as I can,” and highlighted his commitment to finding time for jogging, rowing, or walking two or three times a week, in addition to enjoying cycling.
