Former Union minister Hansraj Ahir’s nephew Mahesh Ahir (26) and his close friend, Harish Dhote (27), were found hanging in a wooded area in Chandigarh on Wednesday afternoon.
Both were residents of Chandrapur in Maharashtra, report Pawan Tiwari & Mazhar Ali. Sources in Chandrapur said the two had left home on March 14 saying they were going to Ujjain in MP. But, they did not reach Ujjain and their mobile phones were unreachable. Their family members then lodged a missing report with Chandrapur police on March 15.
Police traced their mobile location at Haridwar and the family members even went to Uttarakhand in their search.
Mahesh was the son of Hansraj Ahir’s elder brother Harishchandra Ahir.
According to Chandigarh police, a passerby noticed two persons hanging from trees in a forested patch in sector 52 around 1 pm and informed cops, who took the duo to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Police found travel tickets on the person of the deceased, which indicated that the duo had reached Chandigarh by a bus from Dehradun on Wednesday morning. A liquor bottle and glasses were also recovered at the spot.
Police ascertained the identity of the two from documents found on the spot and contacted their family members. The postmortem examination is likely to be conducted on Thursday after the kin’s arrival.
Chandigarh police have registered a case under relevant sections of IPC and initiated inquest proceedings.
Charanjeet Singh Virk, DSP, south-west division, said no external injury marks were found on the bodies. CCTV footage obtained from a shop near interstate bus terminal in sector 43 showed the two men buying ropes. “We are investigating the case from all angles,” Virk said.
