BJP hopes to win Karnataka assembly polls on ‘double engine’ plank | India News

NEW DELHI: Increased representation in the state government from the Vokkaliga-dominated Old Mysore region and welfare and development initiatives of the Basavraj Bommai government coupled with the central schemes make BJP confident to improve its tally in Karnataka assembly polls dates for which are likely to be announced in a few weeks.
The party has launched a voter outreach campaign — “Vijay Sankalp Abhiyan — across the state with a target of winning 150 of the 224 assembly seats with focus on making big gains in the Old Mysore region which has so far been the weakest area for the party.
The outreach campaign was recently launched by BJP president JP Nadda, followed by a mega rally and roadshow in Dharwad-Hubli region by Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with senior party leader BS Yediyurappa and chief minister Bommai.
“The development carried out by the double engine government— in the Centre and state— has brought prosperity to the state. We will now take the next step towards double engine governance. To achieve this, BJP must secure a two-third majority,” said party general secretary (in-charge of Karnataka) and Rajya Sabha MP Arun Singh, who has been visiting the state frequently.
Singh said the Bommai government has been adjudged the top achiever in the ‘Ëase of Doing Business’ ranking released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in 2022.
“The state had the highest GST collection in 2021-22 and was the top performer in Start-up category. We are confident that people of the state will vote for BJP,” he said. BJP emerged as the single largest party in the last elections.
Other than continuation of the free ration scheme under the “PM Garib Kalyan Yojana”, the state government has provided 10 lakh students with scholarships worth Rs 440 crore under the “Raitha Vidya Nidhi Scholarship Scheme”. “The scholarship scheme will be a game-changer,” said Singh who accompanied Shah during his visit to Dharward-Hubli region last Friday.
While the party is confident of retaining its dominance in north and central Karnataka, it aims to make big gains from South Mysore and Kalyana-Karnataka regions.
The party had won only six of the 59 seats in South Mysore region in 2018 assembly polls. However, the party is confident of increasing its tally this time around as several MLAs from Congress and JD had switched to BJP and all of them are ministers in the Bommai government at present. “Since we have increased representation from the region, the ministers have worked hard and the party has expanded its footprint in the South Mysore region,” he said.
K Sudhakar, ST Somashekhar, KC Narayan Gowda, Manirathna Naidu, MTB Nagraj and K Gopalaiah are a few ministers in the Bommai government from South Mysore region.
The party’s top leaders also made strategic trips to the Vokaliga-dominated constituencies with PM Narendra Modi recently unveiling a statue of Kempegowda, the most celebrated icon of the community, at the Bengaluru airport.
