NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday said that its team was attacked by a crowd on January 5 during the arrest of TMC leader Shankar Adhya in connection with the PDS scam, which the probe agency claimed was of “enormous” magnitude. The probe agency said that the proceeds of crime transferred by a suspect amount to Rs 9,000-10,000 crore, out of which Rs 2,000 crore are “suspected to be transferred to Dubai” either directly or through Bangladesh.
This is the second incident of attack on the ED team in the state. On last Friday, three ED officers were injured and several of their vehicles vandalised as hundreds of supporters of TMC leader Shajahan Sheikh attacked them. The attack happened when the ED team went to Sheikh’s house in Sandeshkhali for a raid in connection with alleged irregularities in the state’s ration system.
The ED also accused the West Bengal police of registering FIR under bailable, non-scheduled offences sections in the attack on search party in Sandeshkhali and said the FIR copy has not been shared with the central probe agency.
Meanwhile, a case has been filed under the FEMA Act against a foreign currency exchange dealing company owned by Shankar Adhya, who was arrested by the central agency sleuths on January 5 in the ration distribution case.
The case against this company, sources said, was started after the ED sleuths got definite clues on a major portion of the ration distribution case proceeds which were first converted from Indian rupees to foreign currency and simultaneously, transferred mainly to Dubai through the Hawala route.
The ED counsel has already updated a special court of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata about the details on how the proceeds were channelized abroad through such foreign exchange and hawala routes.
