NEW DELHI: In an innovative move to acknowledge and financially value the unpaid domestic work of women, Sunil Jaglan, the activist renowned for his ‘Selfie with Daughter’ initiative, has now launched the ‘Womaniya GDP‘ campaign in Haryana’s Hisar and Jind districts. This campaign focuses particularly on women in rural areas and aims to give them a fair share for their often overlooked domestic contributions.
Speaking to PTI, Jaglan highlighted the oversight in conventional GDP (Gross Domestic Product) metrics, which fail to account for the significant unpaid domestic work performed by countless women. “Womaniya GDP campaign has been initiated to give women a fair share for their unpaid and unrecognised domestic work, which is as demanding as a regular 9 to 5 job,” Jaglan stated.
The campaign promotes the idea that women should receive financial compensation for their domestic work. This compensation, potentially from family members like husbands or brothers, would be credited to the women’s accounts monthly, symbolizing an income for their efforts.
Jaglan emphasized the campaign’s role in raising awareness in villages and involving men to help them understand how they can empower the women in their families through financial independence. “We are making our efforts… things may take time, but the campaign will surely have a positive impact,” said Jaglan, who is also the former sarpanch of Jind’s Bibipur village.
The ‘Womaniya GDP’ campaign is rooted in Jaglan’s desire to aid women in achieving financial independence, empowering them to make their own decisions and address issues like domestic violence, gender bias, and discrimination.
Jaglan’s earlier ‘Selfie with Daughter’ campaign had gained significant attention, including praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He explained that this campaign was started to change societal patriarchal mindsets and quickly gained momentum with thousands sharing their photos on social media under the hashtag #selfiewithdaughter.
Highlighting the economic aspect of unpaid domestic work, Jaglan referenced a report stating that such work by women constitutes about 7.2% of the GDP. “If all the women are paid for their domestic chores, it will account for 7.2 per cent of the GDP share,” he added.
A local resident of Hisar, Pooja, shared how the campaign inspired her husband to appreciate her domestic work and contribute financially to her account each month.
Jaglan has been at the forefront of various campaigns for women’s empowerment, including ‘Stop Female Foeticide’, ‘Women Happiness Chart’, ‘Lado Pustakalya (Girls Library)’, ‘First-Aid Kit for Women’, ‘Daughter’s Nameplate’, ‘Selfie Against Dowry’, and ‘Lado Panchayats’. He also plans to initiate a campaign to appreciate Prime Minister Modi’s efforts for women empowerment.
