RAIPUR: Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Thursday said his party understands its role in opposition unity and believes that a strong Congress is inevitable for a united opposition.
Talking to reporters at Nava Raipur, the state capital of Chhattisgarh, ahead of the 85th plenary session of the Congress, he said “Congress will have to be strengthened them the opposition unity will also be strong”.
Pointing out that there is a need for more talks, Ramesh said there has to be a positive common minimum programme for such a unity until then it’s not possible. He said assembly elections are due in Many states, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, by the end of this year to be followed by the general elections next year.
Referring to the arrest of Congress leader Pawan Khera, he described the action as the latest example of prime minister Narendra Modi’s politics of “vendetta, harassment and intimidation” saying that Congress would not cow down or bow down before such tactics. He said the Enforcement Directorate raids in Chhattisgarh, just a few days before the Congress plenary, were also aimed at disturbing the Congress session. He said all these actions were the outcome of BJP fear arising out of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s successful Bharat Jodo Yatra.
Ramesh said three FIRs were filed against Pawan Khera in Lucknow, Varanasi and at a remote place in Assam where chief minister Hemanta Biswa Sarma is repeatedly trying to prove his loyalty to his new party bosses. Pointing out the SC decision to grant interim relief in Khera’s arrest, he said the judiciary is still a flame of hope. “Tiger Zinda Hai, Supreme Court Zinda hai,” he quipped adding that an independent judiciary is inevitable for a democracy.
During the ongoing G20 meetings, Ramesh said the centre is describing India as the “mother of democracy” but the situation within is actually the “murder of democracy”. “Not only the freedom of expression is under threat but the freedom of expression is also under threat”, he said and reiterated that nobody could browbeat the Congress and the party would not succumb to any such pressures.
