Congress questions legitimacy of deputy CM oath in Chhattisgarh, sparks debate | India News

[ad_1]

RAIPUR: The opposition Congress in Chhattisgarh has questioned the oath taken by Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma as deputy chief ministers, terming it as “unconstitutional,” as there is no such post mentioned in the Constitution. This has triggered a sharp reaction from the ruling BJP, which suggests that action could be taken against such misleading statements.
The issue emerged in Chhattisgarh when senior leader and former minister Mohammad Akbar released a video statement, stating, “Two persons have taken the oath of office and secrecy for the post of deputy chief minister in Chhattisgarh, while there’s no such provision in the Constitution of India. If you check the ‘form of oath’ in the Constitution, it only mentions the position of minister. When Congress Leader T S Singhdeo was appointed as deputy CM in Chhattisgarh a few months ago, he also did not take the oath as deputy CM but only as a minister.”
Akbar asserted that unless both leaders, appointed as deputy chief ministers, take the oath as ministers, any work done by them would be termed “unreasonable” and “void” as per the law. He also shared a clipping of the ‘form of oath’ of office and secrecy from the Constitution.
A similar controversy has arisen in BJP-ruled Rajasthan also, with a lawyer moving the High Court challenging the oath taken by deputy chief ministers in the desert state and praying for the cancellation of the appointment of deputy chief ministers as it “violates” the provisions of the Constitution.
Countering the senior Congress leader, Chhattisgarh BJP co-incharge Nitin Nabin said such statements are misleading, and action could be taken against them. “Right from Raipur to Kawardha (Akbar’s constituency from where he lost to deputy CM Vijay Sharma), they were on the rampage. Now, everything will be probed,” Nabin said.
Akbar, who served as forest and transport minister for five years in Congress rule, lost to BJP’s Vijay Sharma, now the deputy CM, from the Kawardha constituency. The Congress leader had won the 2018 elections with a record-largest victory margin of nearly 60,000 votes.
