NEW DELHI: The defence ministry on Thursday approved proposals worth over Rs 70,500 crore for buying different weapon systems for the armed forces.
All the planned procurements are under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category in a boost to the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) programme.
The go-ahead to the fresh procurement proposals came amid the nearly three-year-long standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh with China.
Giving details about the approvals, officials said that the Defence Acqusitions Council (DAC), chaired by defence minister Rajnath Singh, has given an Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of 307 advanced towed artillery gun systems (ATAGS) for the Army.
The indigenous 155mm/52 caliber ATAGS has been developed by DRDO with Bharat Forge & Tata Advanced Systems being the production partners.
The DAC also cleared the procurement proposal for 200 more BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles with an extended range for the frontline warships of the Navy.
Among other warships, these missiles will also be for the four Project-15B destroyers (two INS Visakhapatnam and INS Mormugao have been commissioned) as well as seven Project-17A frigates (five `launched’ in water till now).
The total approval granted for capital acquisition in the financial year 2022-23 now stands at Rs 2,71,538 crore, of which 98.9 per cent will be sourced from Indian industries, the officials said.
“Such quantum of indigenous procurement will not only galvanize the Indian industries towards achieving the goal of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) but also reduce India’s dependency on foreign vendors to a large extent,” Singh’s office tweeted.
