NEW DELHI: Amid reports of fresh violence in Manipur over the weekend, home minister Amit Shah held a series of meetings with chief minister N Biren Singh and representatives of Meitei and Kuku communities, apart from other stakeholders, to review the measures taken so far to restore peace in the state.
On Sunday, Shah held a meeting with the Manipur chief minister; four of his Cabinet colleagues and a Rajya Sabha MP. He directed strict action against the perpetrators of violence and assured complete support and assistance of the Central government — be it through deployment of additional forces or giving food and shelter to displaced people in camps of the Central para-military forces — to help the state government ensure lasting peace. Also, the Centre is probing the weapons still in possession of Kuki and other tribal groups who are in a suspension of operation agreement and action will accordingly be taken.
Later on Sunday, the home minister also met the representatives of the Meitei community.
On Monday, Shah held a meeting with the representatives of Kuki Community from Manipur and a group of civil society organisations from Mizoram.
The purpose behind meeting representatives of Meitei and Kuki communities was to assure them that the government would do everything to protect the various communities that have been peacefully co-habiting in the state. He urged discussion with all factions to spread the message of peace and assured that justice would be done.
Shah stressed on expediting the process of relief and rehabilitation in Manipur so as to minimise the suffering of the people.
