FasTag alert! The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative to enhance the efficiency of the Electronic Toll Collection system and facilitate smooth traffic flow at toll plazas. This initiative aims to discourage practices such as using a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or associating multiple FASTags with a specific vehicle.
The NHAI is also urging FASTag users to complete the ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) process for their latest FASTag in accordance with the RBI guidelines. FASTags with valid balances but incomplete KYC will be deactivated or blacklisted by banks after January 31, 2024, the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has said in a press release.
To avoid any inconvenience, users are advised to ensure the completion of KYC for their latest FASTag. They must also adhere to the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ principle and discard any previously issued FASTags through their respective banks.After January 31, 2024, only the latest FASTag account will remain active, with previous tags being deactivated or blacklisted. For assistance or queries, FASTag users can contact the toll plazas or the toll-free customer care number provided by their respective issuer banks, the release said.
NHAI implemented this initiative in response to recent reports of multiple FASTags being issued for a single vehicle and FASTags being issued without proper KYC, violating RBI mandates. Additionally, instances of FASTags not being affixed to the vehicle’s windscreen intentionally have caused unnecessary delays at toll plazas, inconveniencing fellow national highway users, the release noted.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways says that with a penetration rate of approximately 98 percent and over 8 crore users, FASTag has revolutionized the electronic toll collection system in the country.
The ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative is expected to enhance toll operations’ efficiency, ensuring seamless and comfortable journeys for national highway users.
Recently, India informed the World Bank of significant advancements in diminishing waiting times at toll plazas and expediting export release times at land ports. The introduction of FASTag has notably reduced the average waiting time at toll plazas to 47 seconds, a substantial improvement from the previous duration of 714 seconds, India told the World Bank.
