SRINAGAR: Two infiltrators were killed Sunday along the LoC in Uri of north Kashmir’s Baramulla when security forces opened retaliatory fire and foiled a bid by terrorists to cross over.
“Based on specific inputs about likely infiltration in Uri by heavily armed terrorists from across the LoC, troops were put on a high alert,” a defence ministry spokesperson said in a statement.
According to the spokesperson, the terrorists tried to take advantage of bad weather, incessant rain and poor visibility to attempt a crossover.
“Around 3 pm, the group was intercepted by troops, resulting in heavy exchange of fire that continued till the elimination of the two terrorists,” the spokesperson said. He added that the rest of the group “withdrew to the enemy side of the LoC along with the bodies of the dead terrorists”.
The spokesperson cited army sources to say two blood-stained bags were found at the spot, indicating at least two other terrorists were grievously injured, forced to shed load and flee across the LoC.
“Due to inclement weather, search operations have been suspended. They will resume when conditions improve,” the spokesperson said.
The area in Uri had been kept under surveillance since the alert. “War-like stores were found there, including two AK rifles, six pistols, four Chinese grenades, blankets, Pakistani and Indian notes, Pakistani medicines and eatables,” the spokesperson said.
