SC clears felling of more trees for Aarey Metro depot in Mumbai | India News

[ad_1]

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday removed the last hurdle for operationalising the Aarey Forest Colony depot by allowing Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) to clear 177 trees instead of 84 permitted earlier for construction of the ramp area while expressing displeasure over the MMRCL’s approach in increasing the number of trees to be cut or transplanted.
A bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala was initially upset with the manner in which MMRCL took permission from the SC to clear 84 trees on November 29 last year, and then, after a fresh inspection of the area, moved an application before the tree authority of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for permission to fell/transplant 177 trees, for which permission was granted.
