TN: ‘Petrol bomb’ fuels governor-government hostility in Tamil Nadu

CHENNAI: A day after two crude ‘bombs’ (petrol-filled bottles with wicks) were hurled at the Raj Bhavan gates, the issue snowballed into a full-fledged government-governor wrangle with both sides slinging serious accusations at each other.
The governor’s office raised the pitch, saying police did not register the Raj Bhavan’s complaint on the attack. In response, director-general of police Shankar Jiwal it would be far from the truth to say that more than one person was involved in the attack and that the sentry stopped the attackers on Wednesday evening.
The state DGP said the culprit was nabbed immediately because the policemen on guard duty were alert and that the Raj Bhavan premises already had heavy security around it. He said a fair and full probe would be done in the matter.
State law minister S Regupathy charged the governor with continuously spreading hatred towards the Tamil Nadu government. “He campaigns like an opposition leader,” the minister said.
Raj Bhavan said: “Fair investigation is killed before it began.”
The minister rejected the BJP’s allegation that the DMK and its allies were responsible for the attack, and said the incident could be a conspiracy by ‘someone else’ to bring a bad name to the government.
“There is no need for us to hurl a petrol bomb in our state ruled by us. If some mentally ill hurls a bomb, how can we be held responsible,” the minister asked.
