PATNA: Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar’s close aide and JD(U) minister Ashok Kumar Choudhary on Thursday came down heavily on PM Narendra Modi for trying to change the country’s name through backdoor and dared him to bring a bill in the Parliament if he really willed so.
Talking to media in the party office, building construction minister Choudhary alleged the PM was trying to replace the name ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in connivance with the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT).
“The PM wants to change the country’s name since an alliance nicknamed INDIA has come into being. If he really wants so, he must bring a bill in the Parliament; instead he is trying to change the country’s name in connivance with the NCERT. But the question is does NCERT hold the right to do so?” Choudhary asked while talking to reporters on Thursday.
It is worth mentioning here that a high-level committee for social sciences constituted by the NCERT to revise the school curriculum has recommended replacing the name ‘India’ with ‘Bharat’ in textbooks. Although the NCERT said “No decision had been taken yet on the panel’s recommendation”, the move has triggered bitter reactions from the ruling Grand Alliance in the state.
“Everyone knows India is the English name and Bharat the Hindi name of our country. Yet why this hullabaloo?” the minister asked, adding the government’s priority should have been on bringing the surging inflation under control, but none speaks over this issue.
Questioning the much-publicised announcement about the installation of idol of Ram Lalla in the newly-built Ayodhya temple on January 22 next year, Choudhary wondered as to what is the significance of this programme in the life of Dalits and poor who sleep in the company of pigs and goats and battle for survival.
“Rather, everyone would have appreciated had the PM focussed his attention on religion on the one hand and holding “Job fairs” and announcing steps to cut inflation on the other,” the minister said and asked the PM to explain how the construction of Ram temple was going to transform the lives of the poor, Dalits and deprived sections of the society who face severe job scarcity as a result of government’s move to resort to outsourcing.
