SRINAGAR: Terrorists shot and wounded J&K police constable Hafiz Ahmad in the Hamdania locality of Srinagar’s Bemina on Saturday evening in the latest wave of targeted attacks on off-duty policemen. This marked the third such attack since October 29, raising concerns about the safety of law enforcement personnel and security situation in the region.
Sources said 42-year-old Ahmad suffered gunshot wounds in his abdomen and right arm from close range during the attack while walking home after duty at Fateh Kadal police station, where he’s posted. He was initially admitted to Jhelum Valley College of Medical Sciences in Bemina, where medical superintendent Dr Shifa Deva said his condition was stable. Later, he was shifted to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital for advanced treatment.
Ahmad is originally from Karnah in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district and currently resides in Bemina with his wife and their 14-year-old son. Following the attack, the area has been cordoned off as security forces intensified efforts to catch the assailants. Reports suggested that at least three Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists, including Basit Dar from Kulgam in south Kashmir, are believed to be moving around in Srinagar.
Dar is associated with The Resistance Force (TRF), a covert branch of the Pakistan-backed LeT, and is wanted in connection with the attack on J&K police inspector Mansoor Ahmad Wani. The inspector suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including damage to the spinal cord, on October 29 while playing cricket with friends in downtown Srinagar. He was rushed to SKIMS, where he battled for life for over a month. His condition deteriorated, necessitating his transfer to AIIMS in New Delhi, where he died on Thursday.
The attack on Wani followed the killing of constable Ghulam Mohammad Dar at Kralpora in Tangmarg of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on November 1.
