AHMEDABAD: A 28-year-old computer engineer died after jumping into the Sabarmati river, allegedly under duress as her in-laws kept pressuring her to become a ‘sati’ (die by self-immolation). Sangita Lakhra, a native of Bhilwada in Rajasthan, left a suicide note with details of the persistent harassment by her in-laws after her husband died in an accident on February 10 last year. She had gone missing on May 10 and her body was fished out early next morning, said police sources.
Her father Ramesh Lakhra, 47, a grocery trader from Kim in Surat, filed a complaint with Sabarmati Riverfront (west) police, accusing Sangita’s mother-in-law and four others of domestic violence and abetting suicide. According to the complaint, Sangita had been battling depression for a year.
A postgraduate in computer engineering, Sangita had moved to her maternal home in Surat after her husband’s death. She later moved back to her parents’ house. She had started working at a mall in Vesu last month.
The law against the long-abolished practice of ‘sati’ was made more stringent in 1988 with The Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act of 1987.
