Supreme Court: Veterans, security analysts welcomes Supreme Court verdict on Article 370 | India News

NEW DELHI: “Historic judgment” is how army veterans and security analysts described the Supreme Court’s verdict upholding the abrogation of Article 370, as the Court asked the Centre to conduct Assembly elections by September 2024 on Monday.
Ex-Indian Army Chief Ved Prakash Malik on social media while expressing his delight at the Apex Court’s verdict said: “Delighted to see the end of Article 370.It was often misinterpreted by vested interests. Became an obstruction in India’s national interest & security.”
Retired General Officer of the Indian Army, Lieutenant General Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon also welcomed the verdict and wrote on social media, “Articles 370 and 35A had to go!” … So was written in ‘Kitne Ghazi Aaye, Kitne Ghazi Gaye’ long ago “धारा 370 और 35ए को जाना ही था I”
The 70-year-old Article 370 of the Indian constitution, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was drafted in Part XXI of the Indian constitution titled “Temporary, Transitional and Special Provisions.”
It was abrogated in 2019 by the BJP-led NDA government, which had always been a core promise of the party. The matter was consistently featured in the party’s 2009, 2014 and 2019 manifestos.
Since the 1990s Kashmir has witnessed unprecedented militancy-related incidents resulting in casualties to 14,000 civilians’ and 5,000 security personnel, as well as 22,000 militants till 2017. There had been 69,820 militancy-related incidents during the period. Post abrogation of the Article, in 2021, 36 civilians died, while in 2020, 33 such fatalities were recorded. In 2021, 45 security personnel died, and 30 in 2022.
Ahead of August 5, 2019 when union home minister Amit Shah proposed the abrogation in Rajya Sabha, the government stopped the Amarnath Yatra, tourists and students were evacuated, prohibitory orders were issued and political leaders, including former CMs of the State, Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah, put under house arrest.
Security analyst Brajesh Kumar, on social media said: “Epoch making, #Kashmir issue finally sealed by the highest court. Will impact d way our SF will deal with Pakistanis at #LAC #AGPL & future course(s) of action. A paradigm shift now called for…”
Colonel S Dinny (Retd), said: “Civilisational integration of J&K with India was always there. Constitutional integration of J&K with India is complete now. Truly historic verdict. #Kashmir #SupremeCourtOfIndia,” while veteran Brigadier Jay Kaul, described the development as “Historical judgment by the apex court. All controversies laid to rest. A mess that existed for over 70 years has been swept away. A bold initiative by present Govt at the centre has been upheld. Time state political parties gear up for electoral process to prevail.”
