BALLARI: A brother-sister duo divided by political ideology has now opted for different geographies to ensure that their paths don’t collide. Siblings B Sriramulu and J Shantha have embarked on separate political journeys after alternating as Lok Sabha candidates on their family turf, Bellary in Karnataka, for 15 years.
Sriramulu, a minister in erstwhile BJP govt, is back as the saffron party’s candidate in the upcoming election, while Shantha has moved to Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh on a YSRCP ticket.
In 2009, Shantha was a winning BJP nominee in Bellary, defeating N Y Hanumanthappa of Congress. Sriramulu contested the seat in 2014 and won. When he vacated Bellary to return to state politics in 2018, Shantha was nominated for bypoll. They both lost.
After five-odd years in the political wilderness, Shantha sought a BJP ticket to contest assembly polls in 2023. She didn’t make the cut. Smarting from the snub, she set her sights on Hindupur in Andhra Pradesh, of which her husband is a native. With YSRCP obliging her with a ticket, Shantha is up against former TDP MP B K Parthasarathy.
