NEW DELHI: Expressing grief over the massive loss of lives in the devastating earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday instructed government departments concerned to offer all possible assistance to the affected countries to cope with the disaster.
Principal secretary to the PM, P K Mishra held a meeting in South Block to discuss immediate relief measures. It was decided that search and rescue teams of the NDRF and medical teams along with relief material will be immediately dispatched, in coordination with the government of Turkiye.
“Anguished by the loss of lives and damage of property due to the Earthquake in Turkey. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon. India stands in solidarity with the people of Turkey and is ready to offer all possible assistance to cope with this tragedy,” the PM tweeted.
“Deeply pained to learn that the devastating earthquake has also affected Syria. My sincere condolences to the families of the victims. We share the grief of the Syrian people and remain committed to provide assistance and support in this difficult time,” he added.
“Medical Teams are also being readied with trained doctors and paramedics with essential medicines. Relief material will be dispatched in coordination with the government of Turkiye and the Indian embassy in Ankara and Consulate General’s office in Istanbul,” the government said.
The meeting was attended by the cabinet secretary, representatives of ministries of home affairs, NDMA, NDRF, defence, external affairs ministry, civil aviation and health & family welfare.
A second giant earthquake — this one of 7.6 magnitude — has just hit southern Turkiye. This is just a few hours after the first 7.8 magnitude quake hit Turkiye and Syria earlier in the day and left over thousand people dead and several injured.
