New Delhi: In the battle against gender based violence, the Centre has put ‘Self Help Groups‘ in the driver’s seat to step up community-level outreach, especially in rural areas, to encourage women facing violence to speak up and seek redressal to secure their rights. The campaign aims to equip the around 9.8 crore women SHG members to strengthen the outreach on gender-based violence.
It’s not India alone, the problem is a big concern globally as evident from data which show that gender-based violence (GBV) affects 1 in 3 women in their lifetime. In India data from the National Family Health Survey – 5 show that more than 77% women still do not report or talk about their experiences of violence.
As the world marked the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women’ on Saturday, the ministry of rural development in coordination with other ministries and departments started the month-long campaign till December 23 in the second year of ‘Nayi Chetna – Pahal Badlav Ki’ focussed on the issue.
Women SHG members from across states ranging from Andhra Pradesh to Nagaland shared their experiences of overcoming the odds and standing up for their own rights and that of other women and girls facing domestic violence and preventing child marriages.
According to the officials, the focus will be on deepening awareness on understanding different forms of violence across life stages and contexts, encourage GBV reporting and forge convergence to strengthen safe redressal.
Over the next one month meetings of gender forums will be organised at block level and district level and sensitisation workshops will be carried out for police station personnel and other functionaries like health workers among others, the ministry of rural development said in a statement.
Officials say the over 3000 Gender Resource Centres set up under DAY-NRLM at block level are critical for assisting identified women survivors to get the necessary help through a proper referral plan in cases of gender-based violence.
