AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Friday took out a protest march against the arrest of Sikh youths during a police crackdown on radical preacher Amritpal Singh and his outfit Waris Punjab De.
SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami led the protest comprising the Sikh body officebearers, members, employees and preachers among others to the district administration complex. They submitted a memorandum to additional deputy commissioner Surinder Singh, which included the demand for the release of “innocent Sikh youths” arrested during the crackdown.
He also demanded that the Sikh youths should not just be released, but they should be discharged. Stating that a new narrative is being built against Sikh youths since March 18, he asked: “Is it an offence to say Khalistan? But under its garb, a lot of Sikh youths are being arrested.”
He said the Akal Takht jathedar had directed them to pursue the cases of Sikh youths arrested in the recent past. He said those held in preventive custody under CrPC had been released but not those who have been slapped with false cases.
