NEW DELHI: India on Monday reported 605 new cases of Covid and four deaths due to the disease in a span of 24 hours till 8am on Monday, with Kerala reporting two fatalities and Karnataka and Tripura one each, according to health ministry data.
The number of daily Covid cases was in double digits till December 5, but it began to rise again amid cold weather conditions and after the emergence of a new variant, JN.1.
It carries significant mutations which, scientists say, contribute to its increased transmissibility and immune-escape ability. “JN.1 variant has been confirmed by several states over the last two months. It is possible that the new sub-variant has slowly replaced the previously dominant strains of coronavirus. However, the good thing is that there is no evidence yet of increased severity or mortality among persons testing positive,” officials said. tnn
