NEW DELHI: A day after the security breach in Lok Sabha, the entire security regimen witnessed a complete overhaul with even personal staff of MPs not being allowed to enter the premises.
The visitors gallery remained empty and the movement of mediapersons was restricted, with MPs being allowed to interact with them only at designated spots.
A member on the personal staff of a prominent leader who was refused permission to accompany his boss inside the premises said, “It has happened only for the second time, after the 2001 terror attack on Parliament complex.”
Movement of vehicles was restricted and even labelled cars were checked.MPs were allowed entry only after eye-scanning for which they were requested to stand at a marked place. Police and parliament security staff thoroughly checked the credentials of all those entering the complex.
Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma was not allowed to enter the new parliament building from ‘Makar Dwar’, which is meant only for MPs. Sangma had to get off his car and walk to ‘Shardul Dwar’ to enter the building.
“Ministry officials, including ministers’ private secretaries and other staff, were also stopped from entering Parliament through ‘Makar Dwar’ and were asked to enter through ‘Shardul Dwar’,” an official said
Security personnel deployed outside Transport Bhavan, metres away from the Parliament complex, did not allow anyone to go beyond the barricades they had put up before checking identity cards and entry passes. Security measures were tightened at all buildings in the vicinity. Only those who had valid passes were allowed to reach the entry gates. Drivers of some MPs were denied entry as they were not carrying passes.
