SC Collegium: SC collegium recommends chief justices for Uttarakhand, Orissa and Meghalaya high courts | India News

NEW DELHI: The SC collegium, led by CJI D Y Chandrachud, on Thursday recommended to the Union government names of judges for appointment as chief justices of the HCs in Uttarakhand, Odisha and Meghalaya.
The collegium, also comprising Justices Sanjay K Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna, recommended appointment of Punjab and Haryana HC‘s Justice Ritu Bahri as chief justice of Uttarakhand HC, a post that fell vacant on October 26 on retirement of Justice Vipin Sanghi.Justice Bahri will be the second woman CJ among the male-dominated 25 HCs.
She was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana HC on August 16, 2010, and is the senior-most judge there at present. Before appointment as a HC judge, she had practised in the same HC since her enrolment as advocate in 1986.
The collegium recommended appointment of Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh, most senior judge of the Patna HC, as the CJ of Orissa HC, a post that fell vacant with retirement of Justice Subhasis Talapatra on October 3. Justice Singh was appointed as a judge of the Patna HC on April 5, 2012. He had been practising in that HC since 1990.
It recommended appointment of Madras HC’s Justice S Vaidyanathan as the CJ of Meghalaya HC, a post which fell vacant on retirement of Justice Sanjib Banerjee on November 1. Justice Vaidyanathan was appointed as a judge of Madras HC on October 25, 2013.
