BENGALURU: A skit staged by students of Bengaluru-based Jain (Deemed-to-be) University at a campus fest a few days ago has drawn the ire of Dalit groups for allegedly denigrating the community and BR Ambedkar, and mocking the reservation system. The storm over the act has prompted the university to suspend six students and initiate disciplinary action.
A short video of the skit, enacted as part of Youth Fest-23, has gone viral, triggering protests.
Dalit groups in Karnataka and Maharashtra have condemned the offensive references to Ambedkar and the potshots taken at the scheduled castes, terming it an insult to the entire community.
Alleging that the controversial skit was performed before a packed audience, a Dalit activist from Mumbai filed a police complaint at Nanded, Maharashtra, based on which a criminal case was registered under the SC/ST Act and various sections of the Indian Penal Code , said sources.
An official of the university claimed the row had erupted because only a part of the skit had been circulated on social media. “This was part of a 6-7 minute skit presented at the competition. While the initial few minutes had some inappropriate content, in the last part, the students have given an explanation, highlighting the importance of Ambedkar, him being the father of Indian Constitution, and his works. They concluded with the right message,” the university official told TOI.
