NEW DELHI: German giant MercedesBenz has thrown its weight behind domestic auto companies Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra in demanding that hybrids be kept out of any special tax incentives, and that concessions of lower tax be accorded only to pureplay electric models.
“Rewarding hybrids doesn’t make any sense. Their time is over,” Matthias Luehrs, head of region overseas for MercedesBenz, said as he spoke about the company’s focus on electrics in coming years.
“The phase of hybrids is over,” he said, adding that the internalcombustion engine (ICE)battery combination vehicles were broadly working in European markets only because of the incentives being offered by various governments.
“And these incentives are also going.” Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are betting heavily on electric vehicles, pumping in fresh investments into the green mobility technology, while working on newer models. They have often argued that any concessions towards green mobility should be given only to electrics and “not to intermediate technologies” such as hybrids.
However, there is a divided house in the auto industry over the matter. Japanese companies, led by Indian car market leader Maruti Suzuki and others such as Toyota and Honda, have strongly advocated for incentives for hybrids, which they say are equally helpful in cutting carbon emissions and tackling climate change.
