Rana: US court rejects Tahawwur Rana plea against extradition | India News

NEW DELHI: Following the rejection by a US court of 26/11 accused Tahawwur Rana’s “writ of habeas corpus” challenging his extradition to India, the US state department said it remained committed to confronting terrorism and bringing the Mumbai perpetrators to justice even though it didn’t specifically comment on the Rana case.
The state department said that Rana’s extradition was a pending matter. “And so, given the fact that it is pending, I don’t have any specific comment to offer. I’m just not going to comment on a pending extradition matter. I’m sure the department of justice can outline the specific steps that are required in an extradition matter,” said a spokesperson.
“What I can say is that we are committed to confronting terrorism across the world and we continue to call for those involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks to be brought to justice,” he added.
In a major victory for India’s fight in bringing the perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks to justice, a US court approved 62-year-old Rana’s extradition to India in May.
In June this year, Rana, who is currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles, filed a “writ of habeas corpus” challenging the court order that acceded to the request of the US government that the 2008 Mumbai attacks accused be extradited to India. TNN & Agencies
