When she looks at the sanctuary for dogs she has created, S Sangeetha cannot believe how she made her dream venture come true. “It all began with my six dogs and my hobby for pet grooming,” says Sangeetha. What began as a pet salon has now blossomed into a full-fledged cagefree dog boardingfacility, Barkers’ Billet, at KK Nagar in the heart of Chennai.Six years later, she is among the most sought-after boarding facilities in the city and is booked out during every holiday season. “We want all the pets here to have a good experience and so I try and interact with the dogs before it is admitted here,” she says.
Barkers’ Billet is just one of the pet boarding facilities in the state that runs houseful in the holiday season. Pet parents say holiday planni ng has shifted from booking their own bed and breakfasts to finding boarding and lodging facilities for the four-legged members of their family. The escalating demand for space in kennels, hotels and sanctuaries for pets has parents running helter-skelter to find the right ‘holiday homes’. Fees at most boarding facilities range from ₹400 a day to ₹800 a day.
R Janani started her boarding facility at her home in Saligramam be cause she wanted to socialise her pup and help street dogs. “I thought I would use the profit from the boarding facility to sterilise street dogs and help give them a permanent home if possible,” says Janani.
She and her business partner P Kabilan started Bork n Purr on his farm three years ago and today, they offer airconditioned and non-airconditioned kennels as well as 13 run and play areas. “We are booked till New Year,” she says.
“I wanted to go home to Rajapalayam for Diwali this year, but found that most of the boarding facilities were full, so I changed my plans. I’m spending Diwali with Silky my dog,” says R Shriram.
“When we spend lakhs of rupees on our trips, we also want to ensure that our pets are looked after well and don’t mind spending on their boarding,” says R Saranya.
Sundeep Raina’s Sam’s Pawmates in Perumbakkam is a luxury pet retreat complete with a pet swimming pool and centralised air conditioning.
There are individual kennels and the pets are given two hours each of socialising time both in the morning and evening. “If a pet is not comfortable socialising, then they get their own space,” says Sundeep.
Some veterinarians do not recommend boarding for dogs, as they believe an animal when taken away from home tends to become anxious.
