NEW DELHI: The CBI, in coordination with Interpol, has extradited 33 fugitives in the past one year, sources said on Sunday. This has happened as part of a special operation, codenamed ‘Trishul‘, which aims to geo-locate criminals who have fled the country and bring them back.
Under Trishul, 27 suspects were extradited in 2022. This year, two suspects have been extradited every month on an average, with the number already touching six in the first quarter, data accessed by TOI shows. The operation has gathered steam after an Interpol conference last year in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit Shah highlighted the need for global cooperation in tracing fugitives.
The latest in the series of extraditions under this operation is a suspect named Mohammad Haneefa Makkatt, who was wanted by the Kerala Police in a sensational case of abduction and murder. He was extradited on Sunday from Saudi Arabia, sources confirmed.
Makkatt had a red notice against him and he was wanted by the police in Kozhikode for the murder of man in 2006. He had allegedly fled abroad after the murder and the law caught up with him 17 years later.
“Based on Interpol’s red notice, the subject was located in Saudi Arabia after surveillance of many months and use of information network. Interpol-Saudi Arabia alerted us after locating the subject and requested us to send a team to bring back the subject to India. Today the subject was brought back by a Kerala Police team,” said an official.
Under ‘Trishul’, the CBI geolocates criminals with help of Interpol channels and seeks their deportation or extradition through the formal route, an official explained. Not just tracing suspects, the operation involves tracing the proceeds of financial crimes.
“It also involves utilising Interpol’s Star Global Focal Point Network, analysis of financial crime files and using Interpol’s channels to identify dispersal of proceeds of crime by financial criminals so that subsequent steps may be initiated through formal channels for recovery of the proceeds of crime,” the source added.
The operation also aims to dismantle support networks and generate criminal intelligence on shell companies, fraudulent transactions, money mules and co-accused located globally, so that law enforcement agencies concerned may be informed via Interpol channels for taking suitable action as per their domestic legal frameworks. For this, the CBI works in close coordination with the police in other countries as well, the source said.
