NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Tuesday issued a show-cause notice to Arvind Kejriwal and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for allegedly making “disparaging” and unverified remarks against PM Narendra Modi and violating the model code of conduct.
The notice against the national convener of the AAP came after the BJP filed a complaint against him on November 10,2023, regarding two posts made on X that portrayed PM Modi in a “disparaging, insulting and defamatory manner”.The posts were made on X from the official handle of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Likewise, the notice against Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra came regarding a remark she made against PM Modi during a speech at Sanwer assembly constituency in Madhya Pradesh which were allegedly “false” and “misleading”.
She had alleged that PM Modi had given away PSU BHEL to his industrialist friends.
In its notice, the EC asked Arvind Kejriwal “to explain the statements/allegations/averments, made in the alleged social media posts under reference, against a star campaigner (PM Modi) of another national party and against the political party and by insinuation and innuendo against the candidates for the state elections and to show cause why appropriate action for violation of model code of conduct read with relevant election and penal laws should not be taken against you.”
“In the event of no response”, it further stated, “it will be presumed that you have nothing to say in the matter and the Election Commission will take appropriate action or decision in the mater without making any further reference to you”.
Assembly elections are being held from November 7 to November 30 in five states: Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram. The results will be declared on December 3.
