NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, defence minister Rajnath Singh, parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi and other leaders on Thursday after the lower House adjourned winter session sine die, a day ahead of schedule.
The session, which began on December 4, witnessed unprecedented ruckus in Parliament, specially the Lok Sabha.
On December 8, the Lok Sabha voted to expel Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra from the membership of the house as per the recommendation by the Parliamentary Committee on Ethics, which looked into the cash-for-question allegations against the leader.
On December 13, two men entered the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery and released yellow-colored smoke canisters while two other people carried out a similar protest outside Parliament.
Five people have been arrested and charged over the incident, which sparked a furious row between the opposition MPs and the ruling BJP.
Uproar over the security breach and demands for a statement by the home minister on the matter continued for several days and eventually led to the unprecedented suspension of 100 opposition Lok Sabha MPs (another 46 were suspended for similar matter in the Rajya Sabha).
Despite the number of opposition members getting cutting by more than two-thirds, the Lok Sabha continued with business and passed several important Bills, including three new criminal code laws, which will replace the IPC, CrPC and the India Evidence Act.
