Present UNSC does not reflect today’s reality: UNGA president Dennis Francis | India News

UN General Assembly President Dennis Francis stated that the current composition of the UN Security Council does not accurately represent the present geopolitical situation and requires reform. He emphasized that the Security Council has been increasingly ineffective in making decisions to strengthen global peace and security.
“The reform of the UN Security Council is absolutely necessary,” Francis said. He discussed this issue during his talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.
India has been advocating for the reform of the United Nations, particularly the UN Security Council. The lack of progress in the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform has been a cause of concern for India. India is a prominent candidate for permanent membership in the UN Security Council.
Currently, the UNSC consists of five permanent members – Russia, the UK, China, France, and the United States – who have the power to veto any significant resolution, along with 10 non-permanent member countries elected by the UN General Assembly for a two-year term.
“There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that India’s outreach to Africa particularly with regard to its facilitating the membership of the African Union in the G20 demonstrates India’s leadership in the international arena,” Francis said.
“But more than that it demonstrated India’s long-standing commitment to assist and facilitate development in the Global South,” he added.
