NEW DELHI: A special NIA court here has discharged three alleged Indian Mujahideen (IM) men for lack of proof in an Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) case registered in 2012 in connection with a ‘conspiracy’ to wage war against India by members of the banned terrorist outfit. The court, however, framed charges against 11 others in the case for various offences under UAPA and IPC.
NIA alleged that IM operatives undertook large-scale recruitment of new members for commission of terrorist activities in various parts of India by bomb blasts at prominent places, especially in the national capital. A total of 30 people were arrayed as accused in the matter. NIA had filed four chargesheets. Manzer Imam, who was convicted in another case in 2018 for being associated with Students’ Islamic Movement of India, was arrested in the present case in October 2013. Ariz Khan, who has been discharged, has been sentenced to death in Batla House encounter case, is facing trial for bomb blast cases in other states. He was arrested in 2018. Abdul Wahid, the Dubai-based driver, was arrested on May 20, 2016 from IGI Airport.
